Kilkenny is famed for its narrow streetscape and the favourite laneway of the city must surely be The Butter Slip, entrance north of the Tholsel on the High Street. This lane was apparently favoured by countrywomen for the sale of butter. Seemingly its configuration- alternatively open to the skies and covered- created a draft, which in pre-refrigeration times, helped to keep the butter in prime condition.
