Atlantaquaria

Salthill, Galway City

The Galway Atlantaquaria, the national aquarium, is located in Salthill beside the tourist office in Salthill. It follows the trail of the famed Galway Salmon on its journey from the Corrib River to Galway Bay and beyond. Uniquely amongst Irish aquariums, Atlantaquaria features both freshwater and saltwater exhibits. The deep sea experience features over 170 species of fish including conger eel, ray and lobster.

The Schooners Restaurant above the Atlantaquaria do good evening meals but if it is something lighter you require the neighbouring Arabica coffee shop has a large range of healthy and more sticky- less healthy options. But watch out for Sunday mornings as Galway people like to walk the Promenade in front and the coffee shop gets real busy!

Our Take

The Atlantaquaria with its 'touch pools' and 'salmon pools' is unusual among aquariums we have been to in other countries. The water is murky, the fish are well, murky and there is a feeling that you are actually seeing the sea and all its creatures as they live. Much more enjoyable than watching them in neon lights.
