Roundstone

Roundstone, Connemara, Co. Galway

Roundstone village was built in the 1820’s and is one of the oldest fishing villages on the west coast. Today, its harbour is still busy with local fisherman returning with the day’s catch of lobster, crayfish, crab and mackerel. Roundstone is an area of great natural beauty and has been described as a botanist’s delight, with many rare wild flowers to found in the area known as Errisbeg, which rises to almost 1,000 feet just west of the village. The pop singer Sting once had a home here, now inhabited by the composer Bill Whelan of Riverdance fame. 2 miles west of Roundstone on the Ballyconneely Road , are two of the main attractions of the area, Dog’s Bay and Gorteen Bay . They are formed in the long curving shore of a sand spit which connects a mile-long granite island to the mainland. I n 1991 Dog’s Bay was chosen as a location for Into The West with Gabriel Byrne and Ellen Barkin, the exciting tale of two young itinerant boys travelling west with their white horse.

Our Take

Roundstone, once home to Sting who since sold his house on to Bill Whelan, composer of Riverdance, rightly attracts people of refined tastes. Not overstated, simply a cozy, welcoming fishing village. Whether your pursuit be golf, or mountain walks, why not stay and ponder life
