Recess

Recess, Connemara

The Irish name for the village is Srath Salach meaning the Riverside Meadow of Willow. Although a hinterland as opposed to a town, the main strip that includes Joyce’s shop could be said to be the epicenter. Amusing signs point out that items for sale include `Beer, Books, Eggs, Marble, Wool` and services include `Filling station, Undertaker` and another sign promises `For those who like this sort of place, this is the sort of place you like`. Across the road is a curious triangular lakeside monument stating that on this site in 1897 Nothing Happened`. They don’t tend to lie around these parts.

Our Take

Recess has been likened to a 'strip joint' in the middle of Connemara. Not having had the benefit of ever attending a strip joint we're not sure if we agree, but there is something appealing about the sudden row of bars and shops that give Recess its shop frontage. Far more fun than a strip joint we say!
