Leenane

Leenane, Connemara, Co Galway

Leenane is a small sheltered hamlet at the south-east corner of Killary Harbour , the name in Irish is the poetical‘Lionan-chinnmhara’, the tide-filling spot at the head of the sea. In 1989, film director Jim Sheridan, chose Leenane as the main location for his screen adaptation of John B. Keane’s ‘The Field’, a drama of lust for land. For 2 months the village played host to the film-makers, headed by Richard Harris, Tom Berenger, John Hurt and Brenda Fricker and Sean Bean. Harris received an Academy Award nomination for his powerful portrayal of the farmer, Bull McCabe. There is also a cultural centre in the village incorporating a Sheep & Wool museum with different breeds of sheep grazing outside the centre

Our Take

Leenane has the feel of 'the place where time stood still' and sometimes we all need to be there. A great little spot to stop for lunch or to park up for a lively night in Gaynor's or Hamilton's pubs. You can't get lost, they are beside each other.
