Achill Island

Achill Island, Co. Mayo

Ireland’s largest offshore island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is dominated by three imposing mountains. Its coast is edged by dramatic cliff faces as well as numerous charming resort villages that boasts several broad, sandy beaches.

With a population of 3,000, Achill Island is a place of sheer beauty. On the slopes of Slievemore mountain you can see a haunting reminder of the recent past in what is called the Deserted Village. Once over 100 dwellings stood on this spot, but due to the vestiges of the Famine between 1845-1849, not a soul remains.

Our Take

After a day in Achill you get the feeling you are really in Ireland and for such a wild place with such raw, amazing scenery, you can still find some amazing pubs that are far more friendly than the elements that drove you in there in the first place. If the weather is good you can take a car and go sightseeing but with the unpredictable weather, Achill usually invites a hardier soul.
