Game Angling

West of Ireland

The quality of game angling in Ireland's Western Fisheries Region is quite exceptional. Visitors fishing for salmon and trout in a natural, undisturbed habitat will enjoy a unique experience. The Western Region is justifiably famous for its stocks of wild brown trout. The superb limestone wild brown trout lakes of Corrib, Mask and Carra provide a quality of game fishing hard to equal anywhere in Europe. The Western Regional Fisheries Board also manages the world famous River Erriff and Galway Weir Salmon Fisheries.

The Western Fisheries Region is divided into three separate districts. These are Ballinakill Fishery District, Connemara Fishery District and Galway Fishery District. Amongst these are -

Connemara Fisheries District
Renowned world-wide for its vast number of loughs and rivers, all situated in very scenic countryside and in every way an angler's dream.

Galway Fisheries District
The Galway Fishery District comprises all of the Corrib system of lakes and rivers, including the famous wild brown lakes Corrib, Mask and Carra. The system has many small hill loughs that hold large stocks of wild brown trout averaging about half a pound. Lough Corrib also holds salmon as well as many of the rivers and some of the small hill loughs flowing into Corrib. Most famous salmon rivers are the Clare and Cong. Lough Corrib is the most productive wild brown trout lough in Ireland, having produced upwards on 40,000 over three seasons since the year 2000. Lough Mask is another famous wild brown trout lough where the famous World Cup Wet Fly Competition is held every year since 1953, attracting around 700 anglers.

Our Take

Fishing in Ireland for wild trout or huge pike is every fisherman's dream holiday. The great Western Loughs, Corrib, Conn, and Mask are particularly noteworthy fishing venues. Rivers like the Moy are regarded as some of the most productive salmon and grilse habitat in Europe. Countless lesser known loughs and rivers offer their own reward.
