Portsalon Golf Club

Portsalon, County Donegal

The setting for Portsalon Golf Club, like so many other Irish golf links, is tranquil, picturesque and idyllic. Portsalon is carved out among unspoiled, uncrowded, natural links land, surrounded by the spectacular Knockalla mountains and white sanded beaches on the shores of Lough Swilly. The valley, with its fine, expansive beach, is a summer destination for holiday seekers longing for escape. The setting itself makes the round all the more worthwhile. But Portsalon is no sleeper. This is a classic links course, with several holes along the sea. Beyond its classic links holes, which are certainly lovely, Portsalon offers up a variety of interesting terrain features, including terraced elevated tees and greens, river, and even a bit of a forest.

Our Take

The drive to get to this course is nearly worth it in itself. The views of the coastline and the mountains are spectacular. The course itself is a little more forgiving than some other links. But still this course offers golfers a variety of challenges. Several holes follow the coastline, so close that on one occasion I landed in a sand hazard: the beach! Of all the courses we've played in Ireland, this has to be among the friendliest. You will enjoy your day and even your score while having a pint in the clubhouse, which serves decent pub food in a casual and friendly atmosphere.
