Tucked in behind and spilling out around the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas, the weekly Saturday market is one of the highlights of living in Galway. Located in the laneway between Shop Street and Market Street, the market offers up a cornucopia of aromas, tastes, and sounds, as provides locals with a vital source of much needed staples. Everything from organic fruits and vegetables, to olives, semi-sun dried tomatoes, and hummus, cheeses of all vintages from goat, sheep and the more traditional bovine varieties.
Vendors at Galway’s Saturday Market also provide a variety of take away items, from Scrumptious “fresh, hot donuts” to and chocolates and the best sushi this side of Japan. And though we do not claim to speak with authority on the topic, we are told that Galway’s Saturday Market is also an excellent hang-over cure.
For visitors to Galway, the Saturday Market is an excellent venue for gift shopping, as several local artisans display their crafts of knits, jewelry, pottery, paintings and photography.
