Chester Beatty Library

Dublin City Centre (Hidden behind Dublin Castle!)

Just beyond the Lower Yard of Dublin Castle, The Chester Beatty Library preserves a dazzling collection of books, manuscripts, prints and objects d’art from around the world. It falls in the realm of hidden treasures, as most tourists pass it up in favor of more obvious destinations. The library is housed in a 18th century Clock Tower Building, overlooks a pretty castle garden, now adorned with a swirling motif taken from the passage grave at Newgrange. The garden marks the site of the “Dark Pool” (Dubh Linn) which gave the city its name. Voted European Museum of the Year in 2002, the Chester Beatty remains an oft-overlooked gem. Entrance is free and the library contains a lovely little café.
