Bog Walk

Walking on Ireland’s peatlands, known locally as bogs, is like walking on a giant sponge. In fact, 90% of the bog is water, the remaining 10% being mostly semi-decomposed vegetation deposited in layers dating back to over 10,000 years ago. With an average depth of 3.5 metres and a plethora of mini lakes and bog-holes, a day spent exploring the bog can be a wonderful if not mucky, experience. Crowberry, bilberry and club moss and the intoxicating scent of furze permeate peatland areas along with such wonderful bog plants as bog cotton and bog asphodel; and don’t forget to look our for the orchids. While splashing around up to your knees at times, discover Bronze Age stone walls and walk Sheeauns, Irish for Bewitched Hills, to get an idea of how the boglands have impinged on Irish folklore and superstitions.
